IC INFORMATION
Character Name: Mikoto Sano
Species: He's a yakubyougami, or a god of misfortune.
Canon: A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School!
Canon Point: Chapter 126
Character Age: ~17
Character Appearance: Here
Powers and Abilities:
Sano's ability boils down to causing misfortune for others. This manifests in canon a few different ways, ie: someone's clothes all coming off of their bodies, a storm brewing up at the beach, etc., etc. - he can really do a wide range of things. I'll navigate this by getting player permission before inflicting bad luck effects on other characters. His ability is explained in his permissions post with an opt-out as well.
What Did Your Character Wish For? He wished to be rid of his yakubyougami abilities.
What Potion Did They Receive? Gold
Did They Drink It? No
If Yes, What Element/Animal? He might drink it at some point, so - tanuki!
Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon, or who is someone they miss the most and why?
More than anyone, Sano misses his best friend Mame. Sano is a harsh guy, quick to anger, critical of his other classmates and unafraid to share that, but he never criticizes Mame - even and especially when Mame does shitty things! They've been friends since Sano was kicked out of his old school and started at Hyakki Academy, and they're roommates there. Sano does practically everything with Mame, and Mame is extremely loyal to him as well, threatening to harm anyone that gets near Sano if necessary. Without him, Sano will truly be lost.
Haruaki is also an extremely significant person in Sano's life. Characters remark at one point that no teacher can assuage the darkness in Sano's heart, but Haruaki does just that. Sano takes up the role of Haruaki's protector as soon as he joins Hyakki Academy, and becomes extremely devoted to him as the series goes on.
2. What are they most afraid of and why?
Sano is most afraid of hurting others - especially those that he cares about - with his yakubyougami powers. It is well known that Sano has difficulty controlling his powers, and it is implied that this has happened before, and is the reason Sano was kicked out of his last school in Takamagahara. There are a few instances in which Sano's powers hurt others throughout the manga as well, including shattering Haruaki's soul into pieces which then had to be located and put back together. At his current canon point, he's just been possessed by another youkai who will no doubt use Sano's powers to hurt Haruaki again.
3. What are their emotional, mental, and physical weaknesses and why?
Sano's emotional weakness is probably his temper, which can hurt others both emotionally and physically. He's quick to anger, and sometimes lashes out, which can be problematic when his yakubyougami powers get involved. When Sano gets angry enough, they might be triggered and go out of control.
Sano's mental weakness is his self-doubt, which lends to his inability to control his abilities. He gets nervous when attempting to use them, and often loses control. Sano is hard on himself about this, and still blames himself for what happened at his last school.
Physically, Sano is extremely strong due to being a god, so he does not have many physical weaknesses. Other youkai like Oni are definitely stronger, though, so it's not as if he's undefeatable in a physical altercation. He's also slower than Haruaki in a race...
4. What discrepancies are there between their inner self (who they feel they are) and their outer self (how they present themselves to others)?
A lot of people think Sano is a mean guy, because...he is kind of a mean guy, but deep down, he's also conscientious and sentimental. Although he's quick to anger and can be critical of his classmates, he's also considerate of their feelings and would never want to truly hurt someone. When girls give him gifts, he buys them return gifts even though he doesn't accept their advances, just because he doesn't want to hurt their feelings. He also enjoys soft, fluffy animals and plush toys, which some don't expect, given his tough outward demeanor.
5. What would make them happiest and why?
Sano isn't necessarily hard to please. He enjoys going to school and spending time with his friends. He feels more accepted at Hyakki Academy than he has anywhere else, and he doesn't necessarily want things to change. All that being said, what would make them happiest is just to live a peaceful life with his friends (not too peaceful - he kind of likes the misadventures). He wants to be around the people he cares about and for everyone else to be happy. That's really all he needs.
6. What characteristics does someone need to have to be your character's ideal significant other?
Sano's preferences are a bit of a mystery to everyone, as he rejects girls left and right (several confess to him each day, apparently). He has a wide variety of friends, and he appreciates them all for who they are uniquely, so that doesn't give much of a hint either. Sano does, however, express his appreciation for people like Haruaki when he compares him and Ebisu, saying that Ebisu used to be kind-hearted like Haruaki is. I think compassion and kindness is probably the quality Sano most looks for.
7. Would your character make a sacrifice to save someone else and why or why not?
Sano would absolutely make a sacrifice to save someone else. He is a protector type (he quite literally promises Ame that he will protect Haruaki while he's at Hyakki), and is always ready to jump into action and save the day when necessary, even if he doesn't give himself much credit for this. If someone he cared about was in danger, he would do anything he could to make sure they didn't get hurt. When he fails at this, he's extremely hard on himself.
8. What is one thing they would tell their younger self if they had the chance, or if your character is young, what is one thing they would want their older self to remember?
When Sano was young, he was very different than he is in present day. He was a fearful little creature, prone to tears, but kindhearted and cheerful too. I think Sano would want little "Mii-kun" to stay that way as long as possible. At some point, he started getting angrier, more confused, too affected by the things that hurt him. Darkness crept into his heart, and he became less happy. He wouldn't want that for the little god who trusted his brother and loved stuffed Tanukis.
9. When in dire circumstances does your character fight, flee, freeze or fawn and how does that look?
Sano is definitely a fighter when it comes to danger. He has a fair amount of confidence in his ability to fight physically, and though he's sometimes reluctant to use his yakubyougami powers, he will if necessary. There are times when something intimidating enough might make him briefly freeze, but he'll get over it quickly. He's definitely not the type to run, and he'd never fawn.
10. Why did your character make the wish they did?
Sano wished to be without his yakubyougami powers because he's tired of hurting people with them by mistake. The wish was made a bit flippantly - Sano might have thought about it harder if the contract weren't made in a dream, but I think he'll have to seriously consider whether or not to ask for his powers back once he's in game. Being a yakubyougami has caused him and others pain, which Sano doesn't want (not in a lasting way, anyway), so he'd rather just be human for a while. That was his thinking.
